Holding Time for Illegal Immigrants Extended

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The Police Commission extended the period that city jail inmates can be held for pickup by federal immigration authorities when immigration violations are the only remaining charges.

The change from 24 to 48 hours is meant to conform with federal policy and allows the 48-hour holds to be imposed in addition to keeping suspects through weekends and holidays.

LAPD and immigration officials could not say how many illegal immigrants might have escaped deportation because they were released after 24 hours under the old policy.
