Rosenthal Honored for Iconic WWII Photo
Joe Rosenthal, the photographer who captured the enduring World War II image of six battle-weary men raising the U.S. flag over Iwo Jima, was posthumously awarded a Navy medal for distinguished public service.
Presenting it to Rosenthal’s children along with a pair of flags from the Marine Corps War Memorial, inspired by the Pulitzer Prize-winning work, Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Mike Lehnert said the iconic photograph still inspired generations of Marines.
He said Rosenthal, who was 94 when he died in Northern California on Aug. 20, created “a true representation of the triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity and death.”
