Designed for parents, not kids

GOOD article [“The Kids Are All Right,” April 12] on parents who refuse to compromise because of the kids.

We had friends years ago who refused to compromise their lifestyles.

When I went to visit them in their small apartment on the weekends the stereo would be playing and they would be partying (or whatever) in the living room. Their son would be sleeping in his crib in the corner.

My friend contended that they would not alter their lifestyles. Their son would adapt to theirs. They would not adapt to their son.

Guess what? Their son recently completed his PhD and MD dual degrees at the St. Louis University School of Medicine. He had earlier graduated from Stanford University.

WOW, child endangerment as a fashion statement; you don’t see that too often in the papers.

Fourteen-month-old babies, who are still at the tipping stage and need constant monitoring for choking, are set off to the side to feed themselves, with a view of their parents’ knees rather than the family faces that should be watching over them and giving love and encouragement.

In addition, there’s no support for their little backs and no sides to steady them as they would have in most highchairs that have bucket-type seats secured with belts.

The fact that they, or you, don’t recognize there is anything wrong with this with all the advantages of their socio-economic level is unbelievable.

Anybody can see that this is wrong on so many levels, and yet they are doing it all for the sake of fashion. Once again, wow!
