Military deaths

The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel killed in Iraq:

Nathan S. Barnes, 23, of American Fork, Utah; sergeant, Army. Barnes was killed Tuesday when his

unit was attacked with small-arms fire in Rushdi Mullah, southwest of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division at Ft. Drum, N.Y.

Benjamin B. Bartlett Jr., 25, of Manchester, Ga.; private first class, Army. Bartlett was killed July 15 when his unit was attacked with a rocket-propelled grenade in Mosul, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Bliss, Texas.

Brandon K. Bobb, 20, of Orlando, Fla.; private first class, Army. Bobb was one of two soldiers killed Tuesday when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 401st Military Police Company, 92nd Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Jeffrey L. Chaney, 35, of Omaha; petty officer first class, Navy. Chaney was one of two sailors killed Tuesday when a roadside bomb exploded as they tried to disarm it in Salahuddin province, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 11 at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Wash.

Ronald L. Coffelt, 36, of Fair Oaks, Calif.; sergeant, Army. Coffelt was killed Thursday when an improvised explosive device detonated in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 503rd Military Police Battalion, 16th Military Police Brigade (Airborne), 18th Airborne Corps at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Brandon M. Craig, 25, of Earleville, Md.; private first class, Army. Craig was killed Thursday when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Husseiniya, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

Allen A. Greka, 29, of Alpena, Mich.; sergeant, Army.

Greka was killed July 13 when a land mine exploded near him while on foot patrol in Jisr Diyala, southeast of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Ft. Benning, Ga.

James J. Harrelson, 19, of Dadeville, Ala.; private first class, Army. Harrelson was killed Tuesday when a roadside bomb exploded near his Humvee in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division at Ft. Riley, Kan.

Eric M. Holke, 31, of Crestline; specialist, Army National Guard. Holke died of noncombat-related wounds July 15 in Tallil, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 160th Infantry Regiment in Fullerton.

Ron J. Joshua Jr., 19, of Austin, Texas; private first class, Army. Joshua was one of two soldiers killed Tuesday when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 401st Military Police Company, 92nd Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Christopher D. Kube, 18, of Sterling Heights, Mich.; private first class, Army. Kube was killed July 14 when a roadside bomb exploded near his armored Humvee in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 17th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division at Ft. Carson, Colo.

John R. Massey, 29, of Judsonia, Ark.; sergeant, Army National Guard. Massey died July 15 in Balad, north of Baghdad, of wounds suffered a day earlier when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in the capital. He was assigned to C Battery, 142nd Fires Brigade in Ozark, Ark.

Shawn V. Starkovich, 20, of Arlington, Wash.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Starkovich was killed in combat Monday in Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

Robert D. Varga, 24, of Monroe City, Mo.; specialist, Army. Varga died of noncombat-related injuries July 15 in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 984th Military Police Company, 759th Military Police Battalion at Ft. Carson, Colo.

Patrick L. Wade, 38, of Key West, Fla.; chief petty officer, Navy. Wade was one of two sailors killed Tuesday when a roadside bomb exploded as they tried to disarm it in Salahuddin province, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 11 at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Wash.
