Don’t block stem cell research

Re “Bush vetoes embryonic stem cell funding,” June 21

To even consider President Bush’s argument against stem cell research is a joke. He values a microscopic bunch of cells more than the thousands of lives he is responsible for destroying.

I would hope any politician voting against this opportunity makes plans besides staying in Washington after the 2008 elections. Consider Bush’s successes: Iraq, Hurricane Katrina, global warming, gas prices, energy policy, passports, torture, wiretapping and his Department of Justice. The fact that this administration has done little right should be enough to persuade spineless politicians considering aborting stem cell research to think again.

So, our decider-in-chief has vetoed another bill supporting stem cell research out of respect for the sanctity of human life. Apparently, that respect stops at the Iraqi border.

The moral dilemma of ending the life of a fetus that occurs by the endorsement of stem cell research can be easily eliminated. Simply allow a pregnant organ donor to include the stem cells of her unborn fetus, just as she would with her own organs. We certainly don’t wish for these untimely deaths, but why not allow the stem cells of the fetus as well as the organs of the mother to be used to provide hope for others?

If, as Bush claims, the unused embryos that could be used to regenerate the rapidly degrading line of stem cells are in fact human life, shouldn’t people in fertility clinics who routinely destroy them be charged with some form of homicide?
