2 officials resign in wake of 8 slayings

Guatemalan President Oscar Berger accepted the resignations of the nation’s police chief and interior minister because eight slayings had raised fears that senior officials were linked to drug gangs.
Three Salvadoran politicians and their driver were slain Feb. 19 in Guatemala. Days later, four police detectives who were arrested in connection with the slayings were killed in prison.
Interior Minister Carlos Vielmann and the national head of police, Erwin Sperisen, offered their resignations earlier this month.
