Internet advertising sales soared 35% to $16.9 billion in the U.S. last year as marketers accelerated their pursuit of website audiences.

Fourth-quarter Internet ad spending reached a record $4.8 billion, a 33% gain, the Interactive Advertising Bureau said, citing a survey conducted with accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The Internet accounted for 5.9% of all U.S. ad spending, up from 4.7% in 2005, the bureau said.

The report shows advertisers are increasingly picky about where they place their ads and the results they get. Companies spent more on ads only if they saw Web surfers respond. The top 10 websites saw their market share drop to 69% from 72%.
