Heeding warnings that salaries may not be competitive enough to keep valued employees, the City Council authorized 11% pay raises for the executive director and inspector general of the Police Commission, which would boost their annual salaries to $171,300.

The full raise is likely to go immediately to Inspector General Andre Birotte Jr., while it is uncertain how quickly the commission would phase in the raise for Executive Director Richard Tefank.

“The Police Commission has expressed concern in continuing to retain extremely well-qualified incumbents in these key positions, which are responsible for managing critical civilian oversight activities of the Police Department,” wrote City Administrative Officer Karen Sisson in a report approved by the council.
