Re “Tug of war in the GOP,” Oct. 28

I’ve been a Republican all my life, but with evangelical zealots virtually taking over the party, I have no choice this time but to cut off my nose to spite my face and vote for Barack Obama.

Religion, especially when it embraces the radical viewpoints of Sarah Palin, belongs in church, not in politics. Why should abortion rights, stem cell research, gay marriage and illegal immigration be more significant matters than the economy, the Iraq war and foreign relations?

I’ll still hold my nose when Sen. Barbara Boxer rants and raves, but I’ll do it gladly -- as long as my vote against the Republicans and their dangerous religious followers helps to someday reshape the fallen party.
