Hillerman’s deed
Re “Tony Hillerman, 1925 - 2008,” Oct. 28
The same week that The Times reported the death of Tony Hillerman, the Associated Press released a story about New Mexico schools. McKinley and San Juan counties have added a Navajo-language textbook to their curriculum. “Dine Bizaard Binahoo aah” (“Rediscovering the Navajo Language”) is the first state-approved book of this type.
Hillerman brought the Navajo to people of many other cultures. Now, the Navajo language is being treated with respect by state and county governments.
