Let’s MoveOn

Re “What MoveOn Started,” Opinion, Sept. 26

Ronald Brownstein covered MoveOn.org’s political impact with impartiality and accuracy, up to the point where he tried to cover its negatives. Two questionable assertions were made.

First, MoveOn is not outside the Democratic mainstream on foreign policy issues. According to polling, it’s not even outside the mainstream of the general public. Most people now believe the Iraq war was a mistake. As for Afghanistan, it didn’t oppose the war; it circulated a petition before the war to urge restraint.

Second, no matter how many pundits and writers repeat the assertion that the “surge” worked, there is no evidence to back that up. In fact, satellite photographs point to ethnic cleansing and a mass exodus of refugees as the reason for the decrease in violence.
