Install panels on California’s roofs

Re: “Edison makes deal for solar power,” Aug. 19:

Here’s a common-sense solution to both our energy and environment needs: Require power companies to install solar panels and maintain them on their subscribers’ houses and commercial buildings.

Why use thousands of acres of land when we have all the roofs in California that can produce electricity?

Southern California Edison’s plan to buy solar power from two solar projects in the Inland Empire sounds promising. Edison seems to be heading in the right direction in terms of renewable energy. I am optimistic and hope that Edison continues to inch closer to the state goal of deriving 20% of all electricity from renewable sources by 2010. I also urge that the California Legislature do more than just consider bumping up the state target to 33% by 2020.

In fact, I hope they forge ahead with legislation mandating that the state’s electric utilities generate at least 33% of their power from renewable energy resources. I believe that if Edison and other companies share technologies, this goal can be achieved. This project only strengthened the drive to renewable energy, and I applaud it wholeheartedly.
