A baby western lowland gorilla was born at the National Zoo this weekend in full view of visitors and a zoo volunteer, officials said.

The baby gorilla weighs between four and five pounds, zoo officials believe; they don’t yet know its gender. The mother, Mandara, gave birth Saturday on the other side of the plate glass window that separates the public from the gorillas.
