CALIFORNIA BRIEFING / LONG BEACH
Police on Monday were investigating a drive-by shooting in which one teen was killed and another wounded.
A group of people were standing in the 1000 block of East Hill Street near Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue about 10:45 p.m. Saturday, when a vehicle drove up and a gunman inside fired several shots into the small crowd, hitting two victims, according to Long Beach Police spokeswoman Nancy Pratt.
A 17-year-old from Long Beach was struck multiple times in the upper body and died at the scene, Pratt said. A 19-year-old Signal Hill man was taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound to his upper body; he was expected to survive.
Because of their investigation, police withheld a description of the gunman and vehicle.
Police said they believed the incident might have been gang-related and asked anyone with information to call homicide Dets. Dan Mendoza or Dave Rios at (562) 570-7244.
