Little approval for small cows

Re “Farms downsize with miniature cows,” May 24

So the high cost of feed grain has spurred an interest in breeding and eating mini-cattle?

The real solution to high feed grain prices is not to use less grain to feed smaller and “cuter” cows but to eat a plant-based diet that is better for your health, the environment and the animals.

This article highlights one of the most interesting facets of human psychology: denial.

Ali Petersen, a rancher, says of her mini-cows: “Aren’t they sweet? They’re my babies, every little one of them.” She even has endearing names for the cows, such as Buttercup and Half-Pint.

Then Carolyn Peevler, another rancher, exclaims about her “adorable” little cows.

I wonder how they wrestle with eating their babies, or how adorable they find a slaughterhouse?

A rancher says, “Aren’t they sweet? They’re my babies, every little one of them.” And then she sends them off to slaughter. Wow, what a mom.

Are you sure her name isn’t Medea?

I find it quite disturbing for a person to describe their “babies” as yielding more sirloin and less soup bone. Yuck.
