CALIFORNIA BRIEFING / SANTA ANA
An Orange County jury has decided against three anti-communist protesters who have staged a months-long picket outside a Vietnamese-language daily newspaper.
The jury ruled Tuesday that protesters Trong Doan, Ky Ngo and Cung Tran are liable for trespassing and causing a nuisance.
The civil trial now moves to the penalty phase in Orange County Superior Court.
The protesters have been demonstrating outside the Nguoi Viet Daily News since January 2008, when the paper ran a photo of a foot spa painted in the colors of the South Vietnamese flag.
The picketers say the photo was disrespectful to the thousands of Vietnamese who fled their homeland during the Vietnam War.
