Nine Inch Nails announces revamped lineup, 2013 tour

Nine Inch Nails may have sailed off on its “Wave Goodbye” tour just four years ago, but Trent Reznor and Co. are ready to say hello again.

The singer-producer announced today in a statement (pasted in full below) that he’s re-tooled the core lineup of Nine Inch Nails to include Jane’s Addiction bassist Eric Avery, Josh Eustis of Telefon Tel Aviv and, most intriguingly, King Crimson’s Adrian Belew, alongside longtime collaborators Alessandro Cortini and Ilan Rubin.

As electronics-saturated supergroups with an ear for menace and dystopia go, this lineup seems like a winner for NIN.

The statement announced a full arena tour to come this fall and extend into 2014. No dates or locations yet, though Reznor promises, “Lots of details and dates to come. See you soon.”

Meanwhile, Reznor isn’t waiting that long to take the stage at a major venue. His How to Destroy Angels Project with his wife, Mariqueen Maandig, composer Atticus Ross and designer Rob Sheridan, will make its proper live debut at April’s Coachella.

The band also will release its debut album, “Welcome Oblivion,” on March 5 via Columbia. It comes after Reznor’s well-received soundtracks with Atticus Ross for “The Social Network” and “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.”

NOTE FROM TRENT:

Nine Inch Nails are touring this year.

I was working with Adrian Belew on some musical ideas, which led to some discussion on performing, which led to some beard-scratching, which (many steps later) led to the decision to re-think the idea of what Nine Inch Nails could be, and the idea of playing a show. Calls were made to some friends, lots of new ideas were discussed, and a show was booked -- which led to another, which somehow led to a lot of shows.

The band is reinventing itself from scratch and will be comprised of Eric Avery, Adrian Belew, Alessandro Cortini, Josh Eustis, Ilan Rubin, and me. The first shows will begin this summer, followed by a full-on arena tour of the US this fall, and lots of other dates worldwide to follow through 2014.

Lots of details and dates to come. See you soon.
