Re “I miss you, daddy,” Oct. 17

Kudos to Jennifer Taylor, the kindergarten teacher in Palmdale, for knowing that teaching is more than robotically adhering to the California K-12 standards.

I don’t think assembling a care package for a classmate’s father on deployment fits into either this year’s standards or next year’s — but showing kids how to be caring, supportive members of society certainly needs to be part of what goes on in school.

A note of thanks to Times staff writer Stephen Ceasar. His article about 6-year-old Joseph Bonner brought back memories. My father, returning from a 14-month commitment in Vietnam, surprised me by showing up at my fifth-grade football practice.

I do not tear up very often these days, but I did after reading this story and seeing the photos. Thank you for touching my heart.
