Letters: A bishop’s other cause

Re “Jack Tuell, 1923-2014: Bishop changed views on gays,” Obituary, Jan.14

Bishop Jack Tuell was more than a one-issue voice for his social conscience. As his mind went where his heart directed, he applied his leadership also to the plight of the poor who are victimized by state lotteries and other forms of gambling.

Along the same lines, he had a heart for those enslaved by America’s alcohol traffic. As a lifelong abstainer from alcoholic beverages, he was for many years a member of the California Council on Alcohol Problems, participating in its advocacy against both predatory gambling and irresponsible alcohol legislation.
