North Hollywood residents return home after mysterious explosion
Residents in a North Hollywood neighborhood were allowed to return home Tuesday after a bomb squad investigated a mysterious explosion.
Police began receiving calls about 12:30 a.m. after an explosion in the cab of a truck in the 11300 block of Miranda Street, said Sgt. Mike Kammert of the Los Angeles Police Department.
The truck was parked behind a home. The explosion blasted open its roof, damaged the home and blew out several windows in the area, authorities said.
Officials said at least one propane tank was intact inside the truck, and the LAPD bomb squad was investigating whether a second tank may have accidentally blown up.
“It was a pretty good boom,” Kammert said.
There were no reports of injuries, but the blast shut down the neighborhood past dawn. North Hollywood residents within 100 yards of the home were asked to evacuate – about 30 heeded the warning – or to shelter in place until the area was cleared, Lt. Todd Hankel told KTLA-TV.
A one-block area around the home was cordoned off for hours by police.
It was not immediately clear whether the homeowner or truck owner had been reached by police. Police treated the area as a crime scene until they determined the blast was accidental.
