Mega Millions jackpot: 20 others win large sums, 2 in California
As the wait wore on for the holders of two winning tickets to claim their Mega Millions jackpot, lottery officials said 20 others nationwide will have sizable winnings coming their way.
The two tickets for the overall $636-million jackpot were sold in San Jose and in Atlanta, according to lottery officials. But 20 others were sold nationwide that matched five of six numbers, just missing the Mega.
The vast majority of those tickets are worth $1 million, but because of different rules in California the two winning tickets here are worth about $2.6 million each. They were sold at Fullers Liquor & Deli Inc. on Rosecrans Street in San Diego and at Square Bottle Liquor on Naples Street in Chula Vista, said California Lottery spokesman Alex Traverso.
Each of the above stores that sold the tickets will get a half-percent of the split.

Traverso said that the first thing winning ticket holders should do is sign the back of their ticket in ink.
“That’s Step 1, and Step 2 is come into the office and claim as soon as you can. Leave less to chance,” he said. “Get the claim process started. Odds are it’s going to be eight weeks until you see your first check.”
He said while Lottery officials respect winners’ rights to privacy, according to regulations, their names are ultimately public information.
“No one can really remain anonymous,” Traverso said.
Tuesday’s winning numbers were: 8, 14, 17, 20, 39 and a Mega number of 7.
One of the two jackpot tickets was sold at Jenny’s Gift Shop in San Jose, Traverso said. That store will collect a $1-million retailer bonus.
The jackpot, with a lump-sum cash payout of $341.2 million, is the second-largest ever for the Mega Millions game.
The largest was a $656-million jackpot split by winners from three states in 2012.
“It was a great run,” Paula Otto, Virginia Lottery executive director and director for the multi-state Mega Millions game, said in a statement.
