Man faces 23 years for killing ex-wife, wounding her boyfriend
A Tarzana man is scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday for the shooting death of his ex-wife.
Hrant Meguerian, 60, pleaded guilty last month to voluntary manslaughter for fatally shooting his ex-wife, Azniv Meguerian, and wounding her boyfriend, Michael Carver, in December at the Tarzana home they all shared.
The shooting took place about 7:20 p.m. Dec. 15 in the family’s home in the 4500 block of Vanalden Avenue. Both victims were alive when police arrived, but Azniv Meguerian later died at a hospital.
The Meguerians had been divorced for some time, but Azniv allowed her ex-husband to move back in with her at the urging of their children when he fell ill, Los Angeles County Deputy Dist. Atty. Rena Durrant said.
Meguerian pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in his wife’s death and to attempted second-degree murder for wounding Carver. He will receive a sentencing enhancement for the personal use of a firearm.
Meguerian is expected to receive about 23 years in state prison. He has been held in lieu of $3.5-million bail since his arrest.
