Readers React: ‘Death with dignity’ laws deserve more debate

To the editor: Bravo! Your editorial convincingly makes the case for enlightened right-to-die legislation. That just four states have adopted such sensible and compassionate laws speaks to incredibly aloof, uncaring legislatures elsewhere. (“California should revive right-to-die legislation,” Editorial, Oct. 30)

It’s most telling to view a list of states have either enacted right-to-die laws or recently proposed such legislation. Conspicuously missing are red-state redoubts — especially in the Bible Belt — that obsess over the phantom “problem” of voter fraud, yet remain dismissive of the ever more prevalent suffering of terminally ill constituents.

May our own Legislature move to adopt right-to-death laws like those that have served four other states so well. It’s hard to imagine any more worthy legislative priority.
