Obama, Romney are finding their (singing) voice [Video]

The race for votes has suddenly become a politically themed version of “The Voice.”

First, President Obama demonstrated some surprising singing talent when he covered a bit of Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” at a New York fundraiser. It instantly went viral on YouTube.

Then, as Mitt Romney cruised to victory in Florida’s Republican primary this week, he serenaded an audience with the more traditional “America the Beautiful.”

The reviews were a bit less charitable for the Republican, particularly compared to the incumbent president’s performance. Cable news networks were pairing the two Tuesday, as did David Letterman for a special edition of “Cool/Not Cool” on CBS’ “Late Show.”

Michelle Obama weighed in Tuesday night during an appearance on NBC’s “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno.” She told Leno that her husband actually has performed the Al Green hit quite a bit behind closed doors.

“He does have a beautiful voice, and he sings to me all the time,” she said.

He also likes to sing some Stevie Wonder or Marvin Gaye from time to time, she added.

“He doesn’t hesitate to show off his lungs to his wife.”

Asked to review Romney’s performance, the first lady was very politically correct.

“It was beautiful,” she said, as the crowd immediately laughed. “It is America’s song. It is a song that’s meant to be sung by every American.”

Don’t expect Newt Gingrich to join in any time soon.

“I’m not running for entertainer in chief, I’m running for president!” he said after the polls closed in Florida last night. “Mr. President, you cannot sing your way past the disaster of your presidency.”
