A Huntington Beach duo proved their worth as the chili champs of Surf City, as they won the people’s choice category at the 2016 Chili at the Beach competition for the fourth year in a row.

Chili Royale beat 20 other chili competitors, while first-timers Chili Maximus won the judge’s choice.

Last year, Chili Royale won the people’s choice and judge’s choice awards.

Angelo Barriga, who leads Chili Royale with friend Nicholas Fisher, said he felt disappointed about not placing in the judge’s choice category but excited to win people’s choice again.

“It feels like a huge relief because of all the hard work we put into it,” the 35-year-old said. “The work put into this is just weeks and weeks of marketing and trying to get it right.”

Randy’s Salsa also came out on top in the salsa competition, with the group winning in both the judge’s choice and people’s choice categories. Fifteen groups competed in the chili competition.

The event also included vendors, carnival games and live music.
