Friday, 7:30 p.m., Rose Bowl. TV: ESPN. Radio: 870, 1150 (at conclusion of Clippers game), 97.3.

Marquee matchup

UCLA tailback Joshua Kelley vs. the Utah run defense. Kelley has topped 100 yards rushing in four consecutive games, including against two of the Pac-12 Conference’s better defenses in Washington and California. This will be another challenge entirely. Utah ranks No. 1 nationally in run defense, giving up 74.6 yards a game. USC managed only 2.9 yards a carry last weekend against the Utes when adjusting for sacks.

Wilton Speight looks like the starter at quarterback for UCLA

It appears UCLA quarterback Wilton Speight will make his first start since the season opener on Friday night when the Bruins face Utah at the Rose Bowl.

Speight took pregame snaps from starting center Boss Tagaloa, presumably indicating that he would do the same on UCLA’s first offensive series.

Quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who left the Bruins’ game against Arizona last weekend with an unspecified upper-body injury, took snaps from backup center Christaphany Murray. Thompson-Robinson wore a wrapping over his upper right arm and presumably his shoulder area, which was covered by his jersey.

Speight started UCLA’s opener against Cincinnati last month but didn’t make it to halftime, suffering a back injury when he was sacked in the second quarter. Thompson-Robinson replaced Speight and remained the starter even after Speight was cleared to play late last month.

Thompson-Robinson had been hitting his stride before he was hurt against the Wildcats, completing 73.4% of his passes over his last three games. Speight appeared locked in late in the game against Arizona, guiding the Bruins on a drive that resulted in the go-ahead touchdown as well as one that helped the team burn the final 6 ½ minutes off the clock.
