Los Angeles Windward girls’ basketball team captures section title

Despite avenging a triple-overtime loss in last year’s final, Los Angeles Windward players were surprisingly subdued after Wednesday’s 85-57 domination of Gardena Serra in the girls’ CIF Southern Section Division 4AA championship game at the Anaheim Convention Center.

That’s because this season the Wildcats have higher aspirations than just a section title — they want to win the inaugural state Open Division game as well. Judging by the way it handled the third-seeded Cavaliers, Windward could do just that.

The Wildcats (30-0) opened a 10-point lead in the first quarter, then began the second quarter with an 11-0 run, capped by Emily Surhoff’s fifth three-point shot. She made eight of 11 field goals in the first half and ended 10 for 13 for 26 points. Courtney Jaco added 20 points and fellow guard Jordin Canada had 10 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.

Deandrea Toler scored 20 points and Sierra Thompson added 17 for the Cavaliers (25-6), who trailed by as many as 32 points and were outrebounded 43-27.

West Hills Chaminade 74, Lakewood St. Joseph 30 — Mi’Chael Wright had 16 points and nine rebounds and Robyn Brown added 11 points and six assists for the top-seeded Eagles (27-3) in the most lopsided final in Division 3A history. Michele Pennala had nine points and seven rebounds for the seventh-seeded Jesters (19-12), who trailed 17-1 after the first quarter and 25-9 at halftime.

Agoura 60, Cerritos Gahr 39 — Kim Jacobs made six three-point shots and scored 30 points as the 15th-seeded Chargers (21-11) took the 3AAA title. Brittany Mazal had eight points and nine rebounds and Noam Leead and Sydney Bennett each added six points for Agoura, which led by as many as 26 points in the second half. Point guard Jewelyn Sawyer had 23 points, nine rebounds and three blocks for the Gladiators (22-9), who were outrebounded 45-29.

Calimesa Mesa Grande Academy 36, Canoga Park AGBU 34 — Sophomore Madison Price had 12 points and 14 rebounds for the top-seeded Cardinals (27-3), who held AGBU scoreless in the final two minutes to win their 20th straight game. Senior point guard Michaela Garcia added eight points for the Cardinals.

In a Division 1AA semifinal, Etiwanda upset previously undefeated Santa Ana Mater Dei, 73-72, in overtime and will face third-seeded Corona Santiago in Friday night’s championship game.
