Tigers’ Cabrera dealing with sore back
Miguel Cabrera was held out of the lineup Wednesday with a back issue.
“He’s able to play,” Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. “Last few days, his lower back has just bothered him. If we were fighting for a playoff spot, he’d be playing. But I just decided, with the off day tomorrow, I’d give him two days. See if it clears up a little bit.
“It flared up a couple days ago, but he still played one game of the doubleheader. He played yesterday. But we’d rather knock it out. We’ve got a couple series against teams that are contending, and we need to throw a good lineup out there. Rather have him healthy for that than necessarily play today.”
Cabrera also has been dealing with an ankle issue, but Ausmus said that “wasn’t an issue.”
Asked whether Cabrera was dealing with back spasms, Ausmus said it was “more of an irritation.”
