New York City: Where Westminster show dogs go to hit the treadmill

Some of the 2,845 dogs coming to New York City on Monday and Tuesday to compete in the 138th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show may want to buff up before they parade in front of the judges.

The Affinia Manhattan at 371 7th Ave. has just the thing: a canine gym outfitted with dog-sized treadmills, YaffBars (energy bars) for dogs, and chew toys.

“Each year, the hotel transforms one of its spacious, indoor/outdoor terrace suites into the complimentary VIPaws Suite, where dogs are able to maintain a fitness regimen,” a hotel statement said.

Its chef also creates a menu for dogs (presumably those not concerned about their diet) of filled beef tips ($10), sliced steak ($12) and grilled steak ($8).

Even when Westminster isn’t in town, the hotel offers guests a VIPaws Pet program year-round, without the treadmill. The package includes pet beds as well as food and water bowls, rope toys, and maps of the best places to go dog walking. Prices start at $199 a night, excluding tax, plus a per-pet fee of $50 to $75.

But back to the Westminster show. Breed judging and preliminary showmanship events take place Monday and Tuesday at Pier 92/94 followed both days by finals, group judging and best in show at Madison Square Garden. This year’s show features entries in 187 breeds and varieties.
