Daily deal: Volcano House reopening

Share

Travelers can sneak a peek at the renovated Volcano House with this deal before the historic property’s official reopening in June.

The deal: The Volcano House’s introductory Pardon our Dust rate offers discounts on both hotel rooms and Namakanipaio Campground cabins. Each of the available remodeled Crater View rooms costs $200 per night (excluding tax). Each of the 10 newly refurbished Namakanipaio Cabins costs $55 per night (excluding tax).

The historic hotel closed for remodeling in 2010, and the National Park Service and the concessionaire have spent more then $6 million in seismic upgrades, safety improvements and renovations.

Nestled on the edge of Halema’uma’u Crater, the Volcano House is located inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. When the fully renovated hotel officially reopens in June, it will feature a dining room with panoramic views of the crater, a lounge and 33 rooms (rather than the previous 35) that are TV-free but have a phone and free Wi-Fi. The gift shop is already open, and there is a temporary snack shop in the lobby.

When: March 22-May 31.

Tested: I tested the deal online for two to four night stays and found hotel rooms widely available in April and May. Cabins are more available in May. When I struck out finding a cabin in April, I called and was told that cabin rooms go quickly. I found a cabin available from May 7-9 and May 13-15 for $55 plus $7.38 tax per night for a total cost of $124.76 for two nights. A hotel stay from May 7-9 would cost $200 plus $26.83 tax per night for a total of $453.66 for a two-night stay. When I asked the reservationist how many renovated hotel rooms were available, she said eight annex Crater View rooms were currently available. The hotel says more rooms will become available as June approaches.
