Making it easier to be green

HERTZ Corp. this month began renting what it calls its Green Collection: more than 40 fuel-efficient car models.

“For the past year or so, we’ve noted more and more customers requesting cars that are economically friendly and/or environmentally friendly,” said Hertz spokeswoman Paula Rivera.

All the Green Collection vehicles get 28 mpg or more on the highway, according to ratings by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The most fuel-efficient car in the program, at 33 mpg, is the Toyota Camry. Although Hertz has a “handful of hybrids” in its fleet, Rivera said, they are not part of the program because there are not enough of them to reliably meet demand.

Hertz charges $5 extra per day for the Green Collection, which customers request by make and model, Rivera added.

The program is available at rental locations at 50 major U.S. airports, including those in Los Angeles, Burbank, Long Beach, Orange County and San Diego. Info: (800) 654-3131, www.hertz.com.

Museum hails the rail

Asmall museum devoted to San Francisco’s transit history has opened at 77 Steuart St. in a building that also houses the Hotel Vitale near the restored Ferry Building.

The San Francisco Railway Museum is operated by Market Street Railway, a private nonprofit association that promotes preservation of historic streetcars and cable cars. The museum’s first exhibit, titled “Vehicles of Recovery,” focuses on the role of street railways in aiding recovery from the 1906 earthquake and fire that devastated San Francisco. The exhibit will run through April 1. Permanent displays at the 1,000-square-foot museum include such artifacts as fare boxes and traffic signals.

Admission is free. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays; closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Info: www.streetcar.org.
