Carrie Brownstein marries two fans at her L.A. book event

For two young women and a church full of witnesses it was a book event they'll never forget.

Carrie Brownstein, the Sleater-Kinney rock star and author of the new memoir "Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl," spoke Tuesday night at a sold-out Vroman's Books event at Central Presbyterian Church in Pasadena, with actress Amy Poehler playing host.

When it came time for audience members to ask Brownstein questions, a young woman raised her hand.

She didn't know what the answer would be: The wedding ceremony had not been pre-arranged, Brownstein's publisher, Riverhead, told the Times.

On the spot, Brownstein made a quick decision.

Brownstein admitted to the couple, "Well, you're my first wedding."

Poehler asked the two about their relationship. "We planned on eloping," one partner explained, "but when we found out Carrie was an ordained minister, we thought, why not give it a shot. We went and got our marriage license on my lunch break at work today."

Brownstein offered a short speech, telling the couple: "In the way that we always root for ourselves, in the way that we root for love to always win out over despair, for hope to win out over fear, all of us here are rooting for you."
