The Curiosity rover has successfully landed on Mars, and has already sent back its first photograph. It was thrilling, but just rubble: not a princess, vicious warrior or trisexual creature to be seen. That is the province of science fiction; perhaps, more than any single planet, Mars has been the focus of the imagination of the most iconic authors of the 20th century.
