Summer is here, which means it’s time for Los Angeles to pull back the curtain on a series of on-stage guilty pleasures. We round up some not-to-be-missed live-action performances, from a roller derby match to relationship-issue roulette and beyond.

TwentyWonder

A one-night mix of comedy, art, music and science, TwentyWonder returns to L.A. to stage some of the city’s rarities.

The fourth annual fundraiser benefits the Down Syndrome Association of L.A. and showcases a varied series of performers, including masked Mexican wrestlers, comedian David Koechner, pop star Matthew Sweet and physicist David Saltzberg.

Held at the L.A. Derby Dolls’ 40,000-square-foot Doll Factory in Echo Park, the 21-and-up event will also feature a roller derby match and items up for auction, such as a Fender bass signed by No Doubt.

TwentyWonder takes place Saturday, July 13, 6:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Tickets are $40; VIP passes cost $150. www.twentywonder.org

“The Boomerang Effect”

Relationship issues are explored — and tracked — in Matthew Leavitt’s “The Boomerang Effect.” The show rotates among five couples whose compatibility plays out across a single generic bedroom set.

The production, which debuted in 2012 at the Odyssey Theatre, is composed of a series of one-act vignettes that include a slacker bag boy and his pregnant girlfriend, a woman who beds her boss with hopes of a promotion and a gay couple whose desires take a backseat to online Scrabble.

All of the pieces are interconnected, making for an insightful peek under the covers.

As one character puts it, “Every decision we make becomes just another link in this endless chain of well-intentioned disasters we call life.”

“The Boomerang Effect” will run through July 27, Thursday through Saturday, at 8 p.m. at Zephyr Theatre in West Hollywood; dark July 4. Tickets are $20 to $25. (800) 595-4849; www.tix.com.

Gays R Us

Conceived by comedian and actress Erin Foley, the once-a-month Gays R Us features a lineup of gay and straight comics for a diverse night of standup.

Held at the Hollywood Improv, the show pulls men and women from different corners of the entertainment industry, including regulars like screen performer Suzanne Westenhoefer; Fortune Feimster, a writer and actor on “Chelsea Lately”; Page Hurwitz, executive producer for “Last Comic Standing” and “The Marriage Ref”; and Liz Feldman, a former writer for “Ellen.”

Shows for the summer are set for July 3 and August 6 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $14. (323) 651-2583; www.improv.com.
