Ford recalls 74,000 Escape and Mariner hybrids

Ford Motor Co. has issued a safety recall for 74,000 Ford Escape Hybrids and Mercury Mariner Hybrids for problems with a motor electronics coolant pump.

The company said certain 2005 to 2008 Escapes and 2006 to 2008 Mariners could experience “a sudden stall-like condition while driving,” which “may increase the risk of a crash.”

The vehicles were all sold in North America, about 70,000 in the U.S. and about 3,500 in Canada.

No injuries or accidents are associated with the problem, Ford said.

The company has also issued a safety recall for a small number of 2014 Focus, Lincoln MKC and Escape vehicles for an unrelated fuel delivery module issue, which could also result in a stall. Fewer than 400 vehicles are affected.

Ford also reported a “field service action” for some of its 2014 F650 and F750 trucks. About 1,700 vehicles fitted with diesel engines may have a fuel filter problem, which could, as with the two recalls, result in an unexpected engine stall. A related safety recall was issued by Cummins, the company that makes diesel engines and some diesel engine components.

The recall announcements join a host of similar ones. Toyota Motor this week issued a recall for 130,000 of its 2014 Tundra CrewMax cab and Double Cab trucks.

The nation’s auto manufacturers have recalled about 46 million vehicles so far this year, more than at any other time in U.S. history, and well above the annual recall record of 30.8 million vehicles set in 2004.
