GM recalls Silverado, Sierra, Suburban and Tahoe vehicles
General Motors has issued yet another recall on several of its vehicles, noting that an audio software defect may prevent drivers from knowing they have a door open, and that a bad weld may prevent air bags from deploying in a crash.
The first of the two recalls covers 57,512 Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierras, from 2014 and 2015, and Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban vehicles from 2015. On these vehicles, a radio software issue may render inaudible the chime drivers should hear when a seat belt is not being used or when a passenger door has been left ajar.
In the second recall, GM said 61 Buick Encores manufactured from April 10, 2013, to May 8, 2013, and Chevrolet Spark vehicles manufactured from Dec. 30, 2012, to March 1, 2013, may have improper welds on an air bag inflator that “may result in the air bag not deploying.”
So far this year the company has issued 44 recalls covering 17.7 million vehicles in the U.S.
Many of those recalls involve issues with faulty ignition switches, which when defective can prevent air bags from deploying in the event of a crash.
The Justice Department and several congressional committees are investigating why GM issued the recalls this year when the problems were known internally for more than a decade. At least 13 deaths have been tied to GM’s faulty ignition switches.
