PC World magazine’s editor quits
The editor in chief of PC World has resigned in protest after the magazine’s chief executive spiked a story about Apple Inc.
Harry McCracken said Thursday that he had quit over a dispute with Colin Crawford, the chief executive of PC World and MacWorld magazines. McCracken declined to discuss the disagreement in detail, but said it centered on a planned article called “Ten Things We Hate About Apple.”
McCracken had been the top editor of the San Francisco-based magazine, which has monthly circulation of more than 850,000, for three years. But he said Crawford became involved with the story in a way that “I had not experienced before.”
“I did feel I had to take a strong stance on it,” McCracken said. His resignation was first reported by Wired.com and News.com.
Crawford did not return phone messages to his San Francisco office. But he did post a response on his personal blog: “IDG and I hold editorial integrity in the highest regard.”
McCracken said he planned to keep running the magazine for three weeks, then to write for it on a freelance basis.
