‘Despicable Me’ attraction coming to Universal Studios Hollywood

Share

Universal Studios Hollywood offers rides based on movies about rampaging dinosaurs, robot aliens, a 30-foot-tall gorilla and a green ogre with a sidekick donkey.

Next up: a ride based on a movie about a super villain and three orphan girls.

The theme park confirmed that it plans to open a ride based on the 2010 animated film “Despicable Me.” But it is too soon to release details, a spokeswoman for the park said.

Universal Studio’s sister park in Florida, Universal Studios Orlando, opened “Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem” last year. If the Los Angeles version is similar, the new attraction will be a motion simulator ride, featuring high-definition 3-D effects.

Park officials declined to say where the new attraction would be built, but at the end of 2012, the park closed “Terminator 2 3-D, Battle Across Time.”

Universal Studios Hollywood had previously announced that it plans to build a replica of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park at Universal Studios Orlando, but that is likely to open much later.

During a recent conference call with analysts, Michael Angelakis, chief financial officer for Comcast Corp., the parent company of NBCUniversal, said the company expects to increase capital spending by 25% in 2013 to pay for such new attractions.

“Investments in our theme parks over the last few years have actually reset the level of their performance, generating strong returns and dramatically expanding the potential of our theme park business,” he said.
