Matthew Perry's $20-million buy was Westwood/Century City's priciest sale of 2017

The Westwood/Century City area owes much of its history to Edwin and Harold Sans, who not only sold the city the 375-acre plot of land that would become UCLA at a discounted rate in 1925 but also developed Westwood Village.

Students, families and celebrities all flocked to the city in the following decades, resulting in a housing shortage that's seen the area grow vertically more than horizontally. Now, luxury condos attract some of the area's most prominent residents.

In 2017, there were 14 combined single-family home and condominium sales of $5 million or more in the Westwood/Century City area, including a pair of deals north of $15 million. There were 139 transactions of $2 million or more last year, up from 137 the previous year.

$20 million – West Century Drive

Four of the five most expensive real estate sales in Westwood/Century City last year involved the Century building, a 42-story luxury high-rise designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects.

Topping the list was Matthew Perry's July purchase of a full-floor unit in the building. The penthouse has more than 9,300 square feet of living space and wraparound terraces with views of the city, mountains and ocean.

Living spaces lined with floor-to-ceiling windows include a center-island kitchen and a formal dining room that seats 25.

The massive master suite features hardwood floors and multiple sitting areas.

$15.2 million – West Century Drive

A few floors down from Perry's unit, this half-floor condo sold in March for $795,000 less than the asking price.

The more than 6,000-square-foot unit features interiors designed by Joan Behnke, a gourmet kitchen and private elevator. Walls of windows take in city-to-ocean views.

There are three bedrooms and three bathrooms, including a master with dual bathrooms, and a library lined in zebrawood. Two private terraces extend the living space outdoors.

Drew Fenton of Hilton & Hyland and Mauricio Umansky of the Agency were the listing agents. Michelle Oliver of Douglas Elliman represented the buyer.

$9.995 million – West Century Drive

In November, Marc Schorr, the former chief operating officer of Wynn Resorts, sold one of only two town homes at the Century for the asking price. The buyer was a corporate entity managed by Michael McGuire, president of Texas-based Andrews Distributing Co.

Neutral tones are a fixture throughout the 6,000-square-foot spread, which has three floors of living. Walls of glass on the main level open to a wraparound terrace, and the level also features an eat-in kitchen, dining area and den.

On the lower level is a game/media room. The top floor holds each the home's four bedrooms, including a master suite with dual bathrooms and dressing rooms.

Jon Bronson and Mary Swanson of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage held the listing. Keno Rider of PLG Estates represented the buyer.

$7.713 million – Wilshire

Cashmere lines the walls of the theater room at this Wilshire Corridor condominium, which sold in July to entrepreneur and developer Joseph Fryzer. It had been listed for $8.9 million, records show.

Found within the Californian, a 24-story high-rise designed and built in 2006 by Nadel Architects, the three-bedroom unit has high ceilings, private terraces and an eat-in kitchen with a backsplash of frosted glass.

In the master suite, marble lines the bathroom. The double unit has 5,280 square feet of living space.

$6.775 million – West Century Drive

Back at the Century building, this chromatic-inspired condominium changed hands in November for $220,000 less than the asking price.

The 3,440-square-foot residence, which has two bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms, was renovated by interior designer Gina Assouad.

A black marble fireplace splits the open-plan living room, which takes in cityscape views through floor-to-ceiling windows. The modern kitchen is anchored by an 8-foot black granite table.

Dark hardwood floors lead to the master suite, where the attached bathroom, awash in imported marble, features white Caesarstone countertops and a freestanding tub under a chandelier.
