Apple likely won’t unveil iOS 8 until this summer, but already, details about the upcoming iPhone and iPad operating system are beginning to come out.

9to5Mac, which is known for its impressive track record of Apple scoops, this week released numerous reports explaining Apple’s plans for the eighth version of its mobile operating system.

For starters, Apple plans to make iOS 8 much faster than iOS 7, a version of the operating system in which the company focused primarily on a mass redesign.

Along with speed, the Messages app may be changed to auto-delete conversations after a certain amount of inactivity, such as a month or a year. This feature would be introduced as a way to automatically free up storage for users.

9to5Mac reported that Apple may also simplify the Notification Center in iOS 8 by removing the “Missed” section of the feature and only retaining the sections titled “Today” and “Notifications.”

Also on the chopping block may be the little-used Game Center app. 9to5Mac reported that the app could be removed, but users could still access some of its features from within iOS games.

But while Game Center may be removed, Apple could introduce a new app called Healthbook, which would focus on fitness.

Additionally, Apple may create an app specifically for its iTunes Radio music-streaming feature. Currently, iTunes Radio is found within the iOS Music app.

9to5Mac also reported that the tech company is considering creating mobile versions of its Preview and Text Edit applications. These apps, which are used to look at images and create text files, respectively, already exist on Apple’s Mac OS X computer and laptop software.

Earlier this week, 9to5Mac also reported that Apple plans to include an improved version of its Apple Maps app, complete with public transportation information, within iOS 8.

Apple could not be reached for comment.
