Double Fine productions passes $2-million mark on Kickstarter

You thought it was crazy when Double Fine Productions managed to raise $1 million on Kickstarter for its new point and click game in just 24 hours?

Well, prepare for more insanity: The project has passed the $2-million marker and still has 22 days of fundraising on the site left to go.

Needless to say, this project “will be funded” and then some.

The official numbers as of this writing: 60,046 backers, $2,009,398 pledged, and those numbers are continuing grow each time we hit refresh on Double Fine’s Kickstarter page.

Keep in mind, Double Fine’s original goal was a mere $400,000.

It met that within the first eight hours that the project was up on the Kickstarter page.

The Double Fine project is just the second project to cross the $1-million barrier in Kickstarter’s history and the first to cross $2 million.

Last week, Double Fine announced that thanks to the extra money it will develop the game for PC, Linux, iOS and Android and also will add voice acting in English, as well as text translations in French, Italian, German and Spanish.

Backers at all levels will be invited to test the game in Beta and will be invited to vote on what direction the game should take when the developers can’t decide for themselves.

On the Kickstarter page, Double Fine writes that crowd-sourced fundraising sites such as Kickstarter have been an incredible boon to the independent development community.

“They democratize the process by allowing consumers to support the games they want to see developed and give the developers the freedom to experiment, take risks, and design without anyone else compromising their vision,” the company writes. “It’s the kind of creative luxury that most major, established studios simply can’t afford. At least, not until now.”
