Are you running Windows XP? Here’s how to check

Since 2001, Windows XP has been one of the most used operating systems on the planet, but on Tuesday, the popular platform’s end of life will officially be here.

“After April 8, 2014, your Windows XP computer will no longer receive automatic updates that help protect your personal information,” a Microsoft Web page reads. “Even if you have antivirus software, your computer will still not be fully secure.”

You can quickly check if you are running Windows XP by heading to AmIRunningXP.com, a helpful website built by Microsoft.

Although Windows XP computers can technically still be used after Tuesday, the operating system’s official end means Microsoft will no longer send out security updates to Windows XP machines, leaving them and their files vulnerable to cyber threats.

Microsoft is advising Windows XP users to either install a newer version of Windows or purchase a new computer entirely. Users should also remove delicate files off their Windows XP machines.

Users can read about Microsoft’s withdrawal of support for Windows XP on the company’s website. The software giant is holding a promotion that gives Windows XP users a $100 gift card that can be applied to the purchase of a new Windows 8.1 machine.

Likewise, Best Buy is offering customers who trade in their Windows XP computers a $100 credit that can be applied to the purchase of a new PC, an Apple Mac computer or one of Google’s Chromebook machines.
