For her, the fit was a bit roomy

Singer Ashlee Simpson bought an Encino estate last year for its closet.

Not just any closet -- this one is the size of a small two-bedroom apartment. Tucked within its 700-plus square feet are a washer, a dryer and space to hang clothes to drip-dry.

The closet is part of the master-bedroom suite, which at 2,200 square feet occupies the entire second floor of the 9,000-square-foot house.

Besides the closet, the suite has a Zen meditation room, a gym with skylights and ballet bars, a bathroom with a sauna and a spa for two.

Buying a home for its closet might seem impulsive, but Simpson, then 20, knew she could easily make use of the space.

As the new spokeswoman of Victoria’s Secret, she would have piles and piles of lingerie. With more concert tours planned, she had more onstage and on-camera outfits to house. And she always needed a place to put clothes that she might wear to public events or just to have fun with her sister, that other singer, Jessica.

Ashlee Simpson may have been living every woman’s dream since she bought the closet and the house around it. But all that space may have proved to be too much of a good thing. Simpson is selling because the house is too big for her, according to her real estate agent, Jory Burton. But she was astute enough to refurbish the house with an eye toward selling it, he said.

About this house: The house, on an acre, has a two-story entry and 15- to 20-foot ceilings. The dining room comfortably seats 12, and the restaurant-style kitchen comes with two dishwashers, a butler’s pantry, a refrigerated wine room and a breakfast room.

Vehicle space includes two two-car garages and off-street parking for 15 cars.

Simpson is the third owner of the house, constructed by a builder in 1991 as his personal residence. There are 13 air-conditioning and heating zones.

Asking price: $5,995,000.

Size: There are four bedrooms and seven bathrooms. Each guest bedroom has a private lawn area just outside.

Features: The contemporary-style home has San Fernando Valley and hill views, a screening room, two fireplaces and a room with a pool table and a wet bar. There also is a studio, where Simpson records and composes songs; a fountain; a pool; waterfall; and spa.

Simpson’s 2005 album, “I Am Me,” her second, was No. 1 on the Billboard charts.

Where: It’s in the upscale Royal Oaks area of Encino.
