‘How to Succeed,’ starring Nick Jonas, to close on Broadway

The Broadway revival of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” will end its run at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in New York on May 20, organizers announced this week. The musical, which currently stars pop singer Nick Jonas, will have played 473 regular performances by the time it closes.

“How to Succeed” has been a profitable production, recouping its initial $9-million investment in December, according to organizers. But the musical recently has seen its box-office fortunes decline.

The show only grossed $367,605 in the most recent week, representing its smallest weekly box-office gross to date. Attendance also fell below 50% capacity for the first time.

Jonas joined the production in late January in the role of J. Pierrepont Finch. The role was originated in this revival by Daniel Radcliffe, who was followed briefly by Darren Criss.

The casting of Jonas failed to ignite the show’s ticket sales. During Criss’ run earlier this year, the musical grossed more than $4 million over a period of just three weeks.

“How to Succeed” opened in March 27, 2011. The Frank Loesser musical was first performed on Broadway in 1961, starring Robert Morse.

Earlier this week, the new Broadway musical “Leap of Faith” announced that it will end its run after less than a month of performances.
