This Oak Park-bred trio performs maqam, which is often referred to as the classical music of Iraq, with beginnings that may date to the eighth century. Jazz trumpeter Amir ElSaffar leads the group (along with his sister and her husband) singing haunting laments that he learned in Europe studying with exiled Iraqi master musicians.
