TV ratings: NBC’s ‘About a Boy’ solid after strong ‘Voice’

With a strong lead-in from “The Voice,” NBC’s new comedies earned solid Tuesday ratings, according to early numbers from Nielsen.

The 9 p.m. freshman series “About a Boy” averaged 8.7 million viewers and scored a rating of 2.6 among advertiser-desired age 18-49 viewers, marking a 13% improvement on its post-Olympics premiere.

Fellow newcomer “Growing Up Fisher” was flat with its Sochi Games debut at a 2.0, while “Chicago Fire” rose a bit to a 1.9.

“The Voice” rose 8% week-to-week to a rating of 4.0 in the key young-adults demographic, making it the top telecast of the night. The singing contest drew 14.4 million viewers overall.

CBS was the most-watched network, averaging 14.2 million viewers in prime time, but NBC won the night among 18-to-49-year-olds. NBC scored a 2.7 in the key demo, in which a ratings point equals 1.3 million viewers. CBS came in second with a 2.1.

CBS’ “NCIS” had the biggest overall audience with 17.7 million viewers, though it fell a bit from a week ago, to a 2.4 in the 18-49 demo. “NCIS: L.A.” and “Person of Interest” dropped single digits to a 2.1 and a 1.7, respectively.

On ABC, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” returned from its midseason break and fell sharply in its first episode facing “The Voice” since October. It delivered 5.1 million viewers and a 1.7 in the 18-49 demo, its lowest rating yet. “The Goldbergs” almost matched ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ with a 1.6 (flat with last week), though “Trophy Wife” fell to a low 0.8.

“Mind Games” fell hard from its soft debut last week. It earned a 0.6 rating in the demo, down 45% from its premiere, drawing 2.1 million viewers total.

Fox’s “Glee” scored a low 1.0 rating in 18-49, down 13% compared with last week. “New Girl” fared better with a 1.5, growing a tenth of a point week-to-week, and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” was flat at a 1.3.

The CW’s “Supernatural” and “Originals” posted 18-49 numbers that were flat with last week.
