Oscars 2014: For DiCaprio, Depp, Adams, no Academy Award just yet

Share

We watch these big-budget, big-star feature films time and again, and we learn to appreciate the actors and recognize them as Hollywood’s most famous stars. Sometimes we’re such fans that we see movies just because of them.

Brad Pitt. Will Smith. Tom Cruise. Hollywood’s very best, it seems. But, while all have been nominated for Academy Awards, none have won the little gold statue we call Oscar.

[Update: On Sunday night, Brad Pitt won an Oscar for co-producing “12 Years a Slave.”]

Take Leonardo DiCaprio, for example, as another movie mainstay with no Oscar win.

As early as 1994 DiCaprio received a supporting actor Oscar nomination for “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” but lost to Tommy Lee Jones for “The Fugitive.” DiCaprio was later nominated for lead actor Oscars in 2005 for “The Aviator” and in 2007 for “Blood Diamond,” and lost.

This year DiCaprio is nominated again for lead actor in the corporate greed tale “The Wolf of Wall Street.” Pundits are predicting the Oscar to land in the hands of Matthew McConaughey for “Dallas Buyers Club.”

Add to that Amy Adams. The star this year is an Academy Award nominee for lead actress for “American Hustle.” She was nominated for a supporting actress Oscar in 2013 for “The Master,” and received previous supporting actress nods in 2011 for “The Fighter,” in 2009 for “Doubt” and in 2006 for “Junebug.”

Adams will arrive at the Oscars with two of her films up for the motion picture category, “American Hustle” and “Her.”

Don’t forget Johnny Depp received a nomination for a lead actor Oscar in 2008 for “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” but lost to Daniel Day-Lewis in “There Will Be Blood.”

Before that Depp was nominated for a lead actor Oscar in 2005 for “Finding Neverland” and in 2004 for “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” the first in the Pirates series.
