“The Little Mermaid” wasn’t all singing fish and purple clam-shell bras. The initial Hans Christian Andersen tale was a fairly dark story. Now the source material is getting a live-action movie adaptation, and producers have landed their mermaid by casting Chloë Grace Moretz.

Hero Complex confirmed that Moretz has been cast as the sea siren in Working Title/Universal’s “The Little Mermaid,” as originally reported by Variety.

Not a lot is known about the film other than that the “Hugo” and “If I Stay” actress will be playing the title character, and that the story will be grounded in the original fairy tale and not the Disney-fied translation. If you’re not familiar with the end of that story (spoiler alert), things do not go swimmingly for the little sea creature.

Variety also reported that director Sofia Coppola, who was formerly attached to the film, left over “creative differences with the studios.” The project is moving with Richard Curtis (“War Horse,” “Love Actually”) in talks to rewrite the script.

Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner will produce for Working Title, and Liza Chasin and Amelia Granger will executive produce. Executive vice president of production Erik Baiers and creative executive Chloe Yellin will captain the project for Universal.
