Amanda Bynes’ involuntary hospital stay reportedly extended two weeks

Amanda Bynes’ stay at a Pasadena hospital has reportedly been extended by two weeks, following an initial 72-hour psychiatric hold that began Friday.

Word of the 14-day extension was confirmed Monday to outlets including ABC News, E! News and Us Weekly.

The self-proclaimed retired actress was checked into Las Encinas Hospital, which specializes in mental-health and addiction care, on Friday after flying in from New York City. She’d had a rough week in NYC. She had traveled there just days after a Sept. 28 arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs in Sherman Oaks.

A source told People on Monday that parents Rick and Lynn Bynes were “happy she’s safe and ... finally getting some help.” Lynn Bynes’ yearlong conservatorship of her daughter — which was prompted by a July 2013 psychiatric hold that came after months of bizarre behavior by the onetime child star, including arrests on both coasts — had expired recently.

Tamar Arminak, the Byneses’ attorney, confirmed the new three-day hold to Reuters over the weekend. She did not immediately respond to Los Angeles Times requests for comment.

On Friday, Bynes, 28, was reportedly told that after flying from JFK airport to LAX, she would be taken to a lawyer’s office in Pasadena and then to a sit-down with her parents at a West Hollywood hotel. Instead, Arminak was waiting for her at the hospital with medical staffers. Her parents also showed up at the hospital, which does not look like a medical facility.

However, a person with ties to Britney Spears’ 2008 meltdown may have been the key player in getting Bynes out to Los Angeles. The last person she tweeted about on Friday — after going on a tear in the morning accusing her father of verbal and sexual abuse and then recanting that story, blaming her tweets on a microchip her father had ordered implanted in her brain — was Sam Lutfi.

“you feel like a brother to me @SamLutfi i mean it. Thank you luuuuv,” Bynes wrote.

Now, Lutfi was Spears’ confidant and self-proclaimed manager around the time of her January 2008 psychiatric hold and was at her house when authorities came to take her to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Cast by Spears family lawyers as a villain, he said he’d been trying to get her off drugs and would later sue Spears’ parents unsuccessfully for libel and breach of contract.

According to TMZ, Lutfi was secretly working with Bynes’ parents when he contacted the former fashion design student on Thursday and urged her to sue them. The fictitious meeting in WeHo was presented as a chance for the daughter to confront her parents, the website said.

“She’s in good hands now,” Lutfi said Friday afternoon on Twitter. “Many thanks to all those that helped along the way #getwellAB.”
