‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ is no match for ‘Finding Dory’ in Friday box office

The alien invaders didn’t stand a chance against a forgetful little fish. Disney Pixar’s “Finding Dory” came in No. 1 in Friday box office, raking in an estimated $23.2 million in receipts — well ahead of the $16.8 million earned by “Independence Day: Insurgence” on its opening weekend.

This leaves Twentieth Century Fox’s sequel to the beloved 1996 alien apocalypse flick, “Independence Day,” more dependent on foreign box office to recoup its $165-million production budget. The charming “Dory,” in the meantime, now in its second week, has pulled in an impressive $236.5 million total domestic box office since opening.

In third place, with an estimated $6.8 million Friday haul, is Sony’s “The Shallows” — the shark attack thriller starring Blake Lively, which also opened this week. Warner Bros. “Central Intelligence,” the action comedy starring Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson, now in its second week of release, came in fourth, with $5.6 million in Friday receipts.

STX Entertainment’s “Free State of Jones,” the Matthew McConaughey Civil War picture, looks to underperform on its first weekend in theaters, drawing only $2.6 million on Friday.
